In the last of our three-part series interview with Dr. Amy Heineke, she discusses how culturally and linguistically responsive teaching fits into the Secondary School setting – giving educators practical and applicable tips in scaffolding their classrooms for English Language Learners (ELL). Secondary classrooms, while no different from any other class setting, hone’s in on high expectations for rigorous disciplinary content. Teachers of Secondary classes should be asking themselves, “How is language used within my discipline, and how can I scaffold and support my students in being able to reach goals of geometry, physics, chemistry, etc… while attending to language demands?”
